Look no further for great Kids Sermons Ideas!

We are just finished up a bible lesson series, using the movie "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs". We would watch the movie and stop at various time to discuss themes in the movie, as related to the Bible. We play games, learn verses, and see object lessons that help to reinforce those biblical themes that can be found in the movie. Doing it this way, it took about 4 one-hour lessons to view the entire movie. It was a fun movie, but we learned Biblical concepts as we went. It helps to reinforce to kids that the Bible is relevant in everyday life. What other movies can you think of that would be good to use in this way?

A name defines who you are.  The same holds true for a kids ministry.  The name of your kids ministry may be the first way that visitors see you.  What does that name say to them?

Kids ministry names can be a very important part of the kids ministry.

I mean, face it.  Who wants to go to a kids ministry called, “The Losers”?  Although, if done correctly, this might not be true.  Many people sit around their television to watch a show about the biggest losers, each week.

What is the most important thing about kids ministry?  There is probably no argument that the most important thing is to teach the doctrine of the Bible and help kids to establish a personal relationship with God.  But, a few problems can arise with this.  Kids are required to attend school.  Even there, there can be a problem with motivating them to actually participate and learn the material.  But, they are required to attend.

Neither kids nor parents are actually required to attend church or kids ministry.  So, there must be even more efforts to motivate them to attend.

One of the ways to motivate kids to attend a kids ministry is to provide lots of excitement.  Kids ministry games can be a source of this type of excitement.  When kids see that the kids ministry service is a time of awesome fun, they will be begging their parents to bring them back next Sunday.

Having said that, does that mean that the kids service should be a string of games with a short devotional tied on to the end of the service?

When you are a Kids’ Pastor, your dream is probably just to get in with the kids and get busy.  The actual planning of the services and activities may be something that is hard to get into.  But, without  plans, the entire kids ministry is destined to become a failure.  Without planning for both excitement and Bible based teaching, the kids might as well be going somewhere else.   Some excitement can be had without planning.  But, if the Biblical basis is not planned into the activities, why would the kids even bother to come to church?  They can get excitement anywhere.

Here are a few tools that I have found to be helpful with the planning process to gather and organize kids ministry ideas.

Tools To Organize Kids Ministry Ideas

  • Google Docs – You do have to have a Google account to use this tool.  But, Google accounts are free.  This tool allows you to either create online or upload already created Microsoft Office files.  Word, Excel and Powerpoint are all compatible.  Plus, Google has recently added a forms section.  This allows you to have people fill in a form on this site.  The best part of Google Docs is that you can invite others to either view your documents, or even allow them to edit the documents, as well.  So, if you have some people who help you plan, but you can’t seem to find time to get together and plan, this might be a great idea for you.  You can use Google Docs to allow everyone who needs access to get to the files when they want to.  And, if someone makes changes that you didn’t like, don’t worry.  As the creator, you can actually reverse the changes, if you wish.
  • Bubbl.us – Bubbl.us is an only mind mapping tool.  It works like a word web.  You can put one topic in the middle and think of all the words you can think of that branch from that topic.  Then, branch from the branches.   This tool is very useful for brainstorming new ideas for objectives, themes, names or any other ideas.  If you know that kids are interested in animals and you want to brainstorm a new theme for your curriculum, just start off with the word “animals” in the center.  Eventually, you may arrive at a theme that you really like.  You can begin brainstorming on this site, immediately.  However, if you want to save your brainstorming sessions, or invite others to participate online with you, you will need to create a free account.
  • Basecamp – If you have several volunteers, this might be a good program to consider.  Basecamp is a project management tool.  It allows you to place a number of people within a project.  Then, you can assign tasks for that project.  As the people complete the tasks, they can mark them as completed.  Or, if they have a question, they can ask for clarification and wait for your answer.  Basecamp is a free tool, if you are only working on one project.  For multiple projects, there is a small fee.

How do you brainstorm your kids ministry ideas?  What tools do you use?  Keep watching and I’ll share more with you, later.  In the meantime, let us all know what you use.
